Swimming & gyms Public swimming pools around Johannesburg are not always kept in great repair - one exception is the superb, outdoor, Olympic-sized Ellis Park pool (Sept-March Mon-Fri 6.30am-9pm, Sat & Sun 6.30am-6pm). Also worth considering is the chain of Virgin Active gyms around the city (tel 0860 200 911, ); some hotels hold vouchers for single visits to the gyms, or there is a single visit fee of R50.

Taxis Maxi Taxis, Yeoville (tel 011 648 1212), rank in Cavendish Street, and are the most reliable for almost all parts of town. Otherwise Rose Radio (tel 011 403 9625 or 011 403 0000), Good Hope (tel 011 725 6431) and Metro (tel 011 484 7975) cover most of the city. Taxis often also wait outside the large hotels.
