fiogf49gjkf0d One of the obligatory excursions around Knysna is a
cruise
across the lagoon to The Heads. Knysna Waterfront Ferries (tel 044 382 5520 or 082 555 7902) runs several 75-minute trips a day from Knysna Quays to The Heads (R50) and up the river (R30) through bird-rich forests. They also run a ninety-minute catamaran trip through The Heads into the sea (R50) as well as a 2hr 30min sunset cruise (R150) through The Heads that includes champagne, oysters and other snacks. Another option is the double-decker MV
John Benn
, which has a bar on board and is the only way to reach the private Featherbed Nature Reserve on the western side of the Heads. The entire MV
John Benn
trip costs R60, takes four hours and includes a 4WD shuttle to the top of the western Head; there's also the option of walking the 2km back downhill to enjoy spectacular views and see the local flora and fauna, including Knysna louries.
Bookings
are essential (tel 044 382 1693 or 382 1697), and can be made at the kiosk on the north side of Knysna Quays;
departures
are from the John Benn Jetty, Remembrance Avenue (400m west of the Quays and station).
