Pescado Romesco (fish with romesco sauce) is the regional speciality and you'll find it on several menA?s del dia around town: romesco sauce has a base of dry pepper, almonds and/or hazelnuts, olive oil, garlic and a glass of Priorato wine. Beyond this, there are many variations, as cooks tend to add their own secret ingredients. All the restaurants listed below are located in the old town.

Bar-Restaurant Turia , Pl de la Font 26. Basic comedor with home-cooked food. No great choice, just the daily a?¬5.40 menA? del dia , but as cheap as it comes, and not at all bad.

Can Llesques , c/Natzaret 6, on Pl del Rei. Cramped, atmospheric restaurant with low stone arches serving endless variations of pa amb tomA quet (see "Catalan Cookery"), accompanied by drinks dished up in ceramic pitchers. In summer you can eat at tables placed outside in the square.

El Caseron , c/de Cos del Bou 9. Small air-conditioned restaurant just off PlaA§a de la Font, with a decent menu of staples - rabbit, paella, grills, tortillas and fries - and a very good-value menA? del dia at a?¬6.60. Closed Sun in winter.

Les Coques , c/Nou Patriarca. Fine dining in an upmarket Catalan restaurant, just off PlaA§a de la Seu. Around a?¬18 a head. Closed Sun and July.

La Cuca Fera , Pl Santiago Rossignol 5. New place serving French/Catalan dishes with tables in one of Tarragona's loveliest squares. There's a menA? del dia for a?¬9.30.

Mistral , Pl de la Font 17. (Not very good) pizzas around the a?¬4.80 mark, plus the usual (Spanish) menu, including a fine grilled chicken and pricey Pescado Romesco . Tables on the square in summer are its main attraction. Closed Sun.

Pizzeria Trattoria Pulvinar , c/dels Ferrers. Standard Italian fare. Recommended here for a splendid location overlooking the cobbled Baixada de la Misericordia with preserved Roman remains forming part of the interior walls.
