Arrival and information

You're likely to arrive in Gothenburg by ferry . DFDS ferries from England now dock at Frihamnen, opposite the Opera House. Trams #2 and #5 will trundle you from here to the centre in around ten minutes (16kr). Other arrival points are strung out along the docks. Stena Line ferries from Frederikshavn in Denmark dock within twenty minutes' walk of the centre, the Kiel ferries another ten minutes away (3km from the centre in all). Trams #3 and #9 run past both to the centre. Seacat and Stena Line both have offices in Nordstan Shopping Centre, and all DFDS tickets can be bought at the Seacat Offices. Trains arrive at Central Station on Drottningtorget. Buses from all destinations use Nils Ericsonsplatsen bus terminal. The airport is 25km east of the city, linked with the centre by buses running every fifteen minutes from Gate 21 in Nils Ericsonsplatsen or KorsvA¤gen just outside Liseberg Amusement Park to the south of the centre (30min; 45kr).

Gothenburg has two tourist offices : a kiosk in Nordstan, the shopping centre next to Central Station (Mon-Fri 9.30am-6pm, Sat 10am-4pm, Sun noon-3pm), and a main office on the canal front at Kungsportsplatsen 2 (May Mon-Fri 9am-6pm, Sat & Sun 10am-2pm; June to late Aug daily 9am-6/8pm; www.gbg-co.se ). Both have free maps and a room-booking service (60kr fee). They also sell the Gothenburg Card , giving unlimited bus and tram travel, free or half-price museum entry and other concessions, including a free boat trip to Elfsborgs fortress and free entry to the Lisebergs amusement park, though not the rides there. The card is valid for 24 hours and costs 95kr. Gothenburg is perhaps the most immediately attractive Swedish city around which to walk , though you may well use the public transport system of trams and buses. Each city journey costs 16kr for adults, though it's cheaper to buy a ten-trip Rabattkort for 120kr. Tickets can be bought from the driver, but are cheaper from Tidpunkten and pressbyran kiosks around the city. Fare dodging now incurs an instant 600kr fine, and ticket inspectors are on the increase. Just get on and punch "2" for city rides and "BYTE" if you are continuing on another bus or tram. Night time bus/tram tickets are double the daytime rates. Taxi rides (tel 031/65 00 00) within the city centre cost around 70kr, and there are 20-percent discounts for women travelling at night, but check with the driver first.
