Eating and drinking

There's no shortage of places to eat in Gothenburg, and the city's range of ethnic restaurants is particularly good, reflecting its trading past. For picnic food , Saluhallen, the indoor market in Kungstorget (Mon-Thurs 9am-6pm, Fri 8am-6.30pm, Sat 8am-3pm), is tempting beyond words, and houses the two cheapest snack bars in town. In Linne, Saluhall Briggen , Tredje LA?nggatan, is smaller but brimming with mouthwatering fish, cheeses and cheap cafAİs. Many of the most glitzy places to eat flank Avenyn, though they are generally samey, packed and overpriced; less obvious and more interesting, and usually cheaper, places can be found in the streets clustered on Haga Nygatan with the cheapest, filling lunches at CafAİ Kringlan , Haga Nygatan 13, while further west off LinnAİgatan is a range of good eateries and cafAİs. For sit-down food , the best cafAİs for value and friendly, laid-back atmosphere are CafAİ Engelen and Tintin CafAİ , just a few steps from each other on Engelbrecktsgatan just off Avenyn - both are open round the clock. For vegetarian and vegan meals, the classic place is Solrosen , KaponjA¤rgatan 4a in Haga district (Mon-Fri 11.30am-1am, Sat 2pm-1am), which turns into a lively drinking venue at night. A lovely choice is Cyrano , Prinsgatan 7 (tel 031/14 31 10), an authentic ProvenA§al bistro with a laid-back atmosphere (Mon-Fri 11am-11pm, Sat 2-11pm, Sun 2-9pm). At lunch time, try FrAĥken Olssens Kafe , A?stra Latmgatan 14, which serves huge sandwiches and terrific cakes. On Avenyn, head for Junggrens CafAİ at no. 37. It's a Gothenburg institution and the only reasonably priced place on the avenue.

There's an excellent choice of places to drink , some staying open well into the small hours. Avenyn is the focal point of much of night-time Gothenburg. At the junction of Avenyn and Kristinelundsgatan, Java CafAİ, at Vasagatan 23, is a studenty coffee house with a Parisian feel. It opens for breakfast (30kr), is a great Sunday-morning hang-out and stays open till 11.30pm at weekends. Napoleon at Vasagatan 11 has a lovely, mellow interior and is set in a fabulous old house with exterior wall paintings (Mon-Thurs 10am-midnight, Fri & Sat till 3am). Greta's , Drottninggatan 35 (5pm-1am), is a stylish yet casual bar/restaurant (though now a little more frenetic on Fri & Sat) which is very popular as a gay venue and also serves good food. There's live music at the Auld Dubliner at Ostra Hamngatan 50b, which claims to have been established in 1870 and serves Guinness and whisky. Nefertiti , Hvitfeldtsplatsen 6, is one of the best places to see live jazz and world music . The city's large student community means lots of local live bands . The best place to hear them is at Kompaniet , Kungsgatan, which has a bar on the top floor and dancing downstairs.
