By train , you arrive at Central Station , a cavernous structure on Vasagatan in Norrmalm. All branches of the Tunnelbana, Stockholm's underground system, meet at T-Centralen, the station directly below Central Station. Cityterminalen , adjacent, handles all the bus services, both domestic and international, including the airport bus. Viking Line ferries arrive at Tegelvikshamnen in SA¶dermalm, in the south of the city, a thirty-minute walk from the modern centre, or connected by bus to Slussen and then by Tunnelbana to T-Centralen. Birka Cruises services dock in SA¶dermalm, too, just up the quayside at StadsgA?rden. The Silja Line terminal is in the northeastern reaches of the city, a short walk from GA¤rdet or Ropsten, from where you can take the Tunnelbana. Arlanda airport is 45km north of Stockholm; buses run every ten minutes to Cityterminalen (6.40am-11pm; journey time 40min; 70kr), and high speed trains leave every fifteen minutes from Arlanda Express Station beneath the airport for the city's Central Station (5am-midnight; journey time 20min; 140kr).

You should be able to pick up a map of the city at most points of arrival, but it's worth making your way to one of the tourist centres , which hand out fistfuls of free information and sell decent maps for 15kr. The main office (Mon-Fri 8/9am-6pm, Sat & Sun 9am-3/5pm; tel 08/789 24 90, www.stockholmtown.com ) is on Hamngatan in Norrmalm, on the ground floor of Sverigehuset, and sells the invaluable Stockholm Card (220kr for 24hr, 380kr for 48hr, 540kr for 72hr), which gives unlimited travel on city transport (except on direct buses to the airport or on the connecting night bus to the NynA¤shamn ferry terminal), free museum entry to most museums and free sightseeing boat tours. The office also rents out the digital pocket guide, Citikey , for 69kr per day (with a 3000kr returnable deposit), and stocks free copies of What's On , which lists forthcoming events. There is now also a summer tourist office at central station, open slightly longer hours than the main tourist office (June-Aug 8am-7/8pm).
