has an office (daily 8.30am-4.30pm; tel 053/235334) at 105/1 Thanon Chiang Mai-Lamphun, on the east bank of the river. An important resource for trekkers is the Hilltribe Research Institute at Chiang Mai University (Mon-Fri 9am-noon & 1-4pm), between Huai Kaeo and Suthep roads, where you can consult detailed maps and get clued up on the cultures of the north.
