Share taxis depart Hat Yai every morning for Penang, Malaysia (5-6hr; B250). Air-conditioned minibuses run from Hat Yai to Sungai Kolok (3hr), Alor Setar (3hr) and Butterworth (5hr), and VIP buses to Kuala Lumpur (12hr) and Singapore (18hr). Two trains make the daily run to Sungai Kolok , and one a day heads via the frontier at PADANG BESAR to Butterworth (for the ferry to Penang or trains on to Kuala Lumpur). The least expensive but most time-consuming method is to catch a bus to Padang Besar (every 10min; 1hr 40min), walk 800m across the border and take a share taxi to Kuala Perlis (30min) or Alor Setar (1hr) - avoid the obvious route straight down Highway 4 to Sadao, because there's a long stretch between the opposing border posts which there's no inexpensive way of covering.
