Buses
to Mae Hong Son depart from Chiang Mai's Arcade Bus Station and arrive at the northern end of Thanon Khunlumprapas, close to the guesthouses. Thai Yai, at 20 Singhanat Bamrung (tel 053/620105), rents out
motorbikes
(B130-180), and organizes
tours
. Several places on the main street rent out four-wheel drives. The
Tourist Police
are on Thanon Singhanat Bamrung (tel 053/611812).
Mae Hong Song has many peaceful, scenic guesthouses , of which the lakeside Friends Guesthouse, at 21 Thanon Pradit Jongkham (tel 053/611674; under $10), is one of the best, with its smart rooms and nice views. Further east along the lake shore, on Thanon U-domchadnitesh, Johnnie Guesthouse (tel 053/611667; under $5) has basic rooms and herbal saunas in the evening. The clean and friendly Saban Nga House (tel 053/612280; under $5), at 14 Thanon U-domchadnitesh, is more central but less scenic. A little further out, the long-established Mae Hong Son Guesthouse, 295 Thanon Makkasandi (tel 053/612510; $5-10) offers a choice of bare wooden rooms, simple huts and large bungalows, and the mid-priced Rim Nam Klang Doi (tel 053/612142; $20-60) is a beautifully situated, comfortable resort 5km along the road to Huai Deua.
The night market on Thanon Khunlumprapas does the standard Thai
food
, but for restaurant meals try the very popular
Kai Muk
on Thanon U-Domchaonitesh or the upmarket tourist-oriented
Fern,
at 87 Thanon Khunlumprapas.
