There are some
bars and cafes
in the more affluent parts of town towards the southern end of Ataturk Bulvara. A good starting point would also be Sakarya Cad in Kazalay where there are a number of decent watering holes in the neighbouring streets. Two worthwhile options are
Cafe Seven
, Resit Galip Cad 57/A in Gaziosmanpasa, a cafe/bar student hangout with live music in the evening and some snack food; and
London Pub
, 40 Arjantin Cad, Kavakladere, popular with richer students and professionals, and packed at the weekends.
Standard pide and kebab places can be found on just about every street in Ankara and there's an abundance of good sweet and cake shops, though really good restaurants are surprisingly rare. Ulus, particularly along Cankiri Cad, is a good place to look for cheap lunchtime venues, although most night-time eating and drinking takes place in the modern centre around Kazalay where a grid of streets comprising Sakarya, Selanik and Bayindir Soks harbours a range of possibilities, or further south in the well-heeled district of Kavakladere. Altin Sis , Karanfil Sok 17, Kazalay. A reasonably priced kebab place which does good puddings. Cicek Lokantasi , Cankiri Cad 12A, Kavaklidere. One of Ankara's mainstays serving traditional dishes in regal splendour, albeit at a price. Gaziantepli Fethi Bey Kebab , Sanaycilar Cad 35, Ulus. Good variations on standard southeastern specialities. Hisar Kule , on the left inside the entrance to the Kule (tel 0312/309 7898). One of several old-citadel restaurants in restored houses. Wonderful views from the terrace. Book ahead for evenings. Hunkar kebap , Selanik Sok 16, Kazalay. Excellent place to savour I skender kebap dishes. Kebabistan , Karanfil Sok/Yuksel Cad, Kizilay. Plush kebab restaurant, offering all kinds of kebab including excellent mushroom s i s. Korfez Lokantasi , Bayandar Sok 24. Arguably the best restaurant in town, always packed, and serving good-sized portions of excellent, moderately priced Turkish food.
