Summer activities

In summer, the main activities around Aviemore are walking and water sports , though there are great opportunities to do most things from mountain biking to fly fishing. There are two centres that offer sailing, windsurfing and canoeing: the Loch Morlich Watersports Centre (tel 01479/861221, ), at the east end of the loch five miles or so east of Aviemore, rents equipment and offers tuition in a lovely setting with a sandy beach, while six miles up-valley near Kincraig, the Loch Insh Watersports Centre offers the same facilities in equally beautiful surroundings. It also rents mountain bikes, boats for loch fishing, and gives ski instruction on a 164ft dry slope.

Riding and pony trekking are on offer up and down the valley: try Ingrid at Alvie Stables near Kincraig (tel 01540/651409), or the Carrbridge Trekking Centre, Station Road, Carrbridge, a few miles north of Aviemore (tel 01479/841602).

Fishing is very much part of the local scene; you can fish for trout and salmon on the River Spey, and the Rothiemurchus Estate has a stocked trout-fishing loch at Inverdruie , where success is virtually guaranteed. Instruction and rod rental is available from the centre beside the loch.

The area is also great for mountain biking , with both Rothiemurchus and Glenmore estates more progressive in their attitude to the sport than many. The Rothiemurchus visitor centre at Inverdruie has route maps, and you can also rent bikes here, while Bothy Bikes (tel 01479/810111), in the Aviemore Shopping Centre beside the train station on Grampian Road, rents out good-quality mountain bikes with front suspension, as well as offering advice and guided bike tours. For other outdoor equipment, in particular climbing and hill-walking gear, try Mountain Supplies in Aviemore (tel 01479/810903).
