Aviemore's businesslike tourist office is just south of the train station on the main drag, Grampian Road (April-Oct Mon-Fri 9am-5.30pm, Sat 10am-5pm, Sun 10am-4pm; Nov-March Mon-Fri 9am-5pm, Sat 10am-5pm; tel 01479/810363). It offers an accommodation booking service and reams of leaflets on local attractions.

There's no shortage of accommodation locally. On Grampian Road in Aviemore, MacKenzies Hotel (tel 01479/810672, mackhotel@aol.com ; A?40-50) is welcoming and family-friendly, while Ravenscraig (tel 01479/810278, ravenscraig@aol.com ; A?40-50) offers similarly good value. The grandest place in the area is Corrour House Hotel at Inverdruie, two miles southeast of Aviemore (tel 01479/810220, ; A?70-90). Aviemore's large SYHA hostel (tel 01479/810345, ; A?13.25), is close to the tourist office, while the bunkhouse above Mountain Supplies in the centre of Aviemore (tel 01479/810903, ) has good facilities and no curfew. Towards the Cairngorms, there's another SYHA hostel at Loch Morlich (tel 01479/861238, ), as well as excellent accommodation in twin rooms (with shared facilities) at Glenmore Lodge (tel 01479/861276, ; under A?40) - full use of their superb facilities, which include a pool, weights room and indoor climbing wall is included. Two of the best campsites are the Campgrounds of Scotland site at Coylumbridge (tel 01479/812800) and the Forestry Enterprise site at Glenmore (tel 01479/861271).

The Old Bridge Inn on the east side of the railway, below the bridge, serves delicious food and real ales in a mellow, cosy setting, or you can try CafAŠ Mambo , in Aviemore Shopping Centre on Grampian Road, with its bright, funky decor and cheerful burger'n'chips-style menu.
