Ballater's tourist office is in the disused, renovated train station (July & Aug Mon-Sat 9.30am-7pm, Sun 1-7pm; June & Sept Mon-Sat 10am-1pm & 2-6pm, Sun 1-6pm; April, May, Oct & Nov Mon-Sat 10am-1pm & 2-5pm, Sun 1-5pm; Dec-March Sat & Sun 10am-5pm; tel 013397/55306). Bunkhouse accommodation is available for groups or backpackers at the Schoolhouse , Ferndean, Anderson Road (tel 013397/56333, schoolhouseballater@btinternet.com ; under A?40), while there are plenty of reasonable B&Bs in town, including the no-smoking Inverdeen House , on Bridge Square (tel 013397/55759, ; A?40-50), which offers a wide choice of breakfasts, most involving local produce and home baking. A few miles north of town on the road to Tomintoul is Gairnshiel Lodge (tel 013397/55582; under A?40). In a remote but beautiful setting, it's a particularly child-friendly place and a great base for walking or cycling. For camping , the Anderson Road Caravan Park (tel 013397/55727; Easter-Oct) down towards the river, has around sixty tent pitches.
