Practicalities

It's ten minutes' walk east from Boston train station to the town centre - head straight out of the station along Station Street and keep going until you hit the river. The bus station is also to the west of the centre, just five minutes' walk away along West Street. The tourist office (Mon-Sat 9am-5pm; tel 01205/356656, ) is in the Market Place beneath the Assembly Rooms, and here you can pick up details of several B&Bs . Among them one good option is the Bramley House , in an attractively converted eighteenth-century farmhouse about one mile west of town beyond the train station at 267 Sleaford Rd (tel 01205/354538; under A?40). Another good choice is Fairfield Guest House , in a much enlarged Victorian property about a mile to the south of the centre at 101 London Rd (tel 01205/362869; under A?40). There are fifteen guest rooms here - seven en suite - and each is decorated in bright and cheerful style. Town centre accommodation is limited and the best you'll do is the New England Hotel , Wide Bargate (tel 01205/365255; A?70-90), an unassuming mid-range place of thirty bedrooms with modern furnishings and fittings.

For food , Goodbarns Yard , just to the north of the Stump on Wormgate, serves copious pub meals inside or out in a back garden overlooking the river. Vegetarians should make a beeline for Maud's Tea Rooms , inside the Maud Foster Windmill, on Willoughby Road (tel 01205/352188; open Wed & Sat 11am-5pm, Sun 1-5pm, plus additional days in July & Aug). Built to grind corn in 1819, the windmill, with its five whopping sails, is still in full working order. You can inspect its grinding gears and/or buy the (organic) flour it churns out at the tearoom, which serves a range of vegetarian and vegan meals, as well as a good selection of delicious cakes. The windmill is about ten minutes walk northeast of the Market Place, beside the road to Horncastle.
