Chepstow's train station is five minutes' walk to the south of the High Street; its bus station is behind the shops on the other side of the western Town Gate. The tourist office is located in the castle car park, off Bridge Street (daily: Easter-Oct 10am-6pm; Nov-Easter 10am-1pm & 2-4pm; tel 01291/623772). Inexpensive B&B accommodation can be found at Mrs Batchelor , 7 Lancaster Way (tel 01291/626344; under A?40), fifteen minutes' walk from the centre of town towards Tintern and, a mile east of town, over the Wye, the wonderful Upper Sedbury House , Sedbury Lane (tel 01291/627173; under A?40). The George Hotel (tel 01291/625363; A?70-90) is a grand old coaching inn next to the medieval gate on Moor Street. The nearest YHA hostel , St Briavels Castle (tel 01594/530272, ; under A?40), is seven miles northeast, over the border in England.

Chepstow has a handful of decent restaurants and a host of good pubs . The Grape Escape , on St Mary's Street, by the river, is best for reasonably inexpensive dining. For gourmet meals, try the moderately priced Wye Knot , on The Back (tel 01291/622929). The Five Alls , at the bottom of High Street, is an earthy local pub.
