Colchester has two train stations with services from London, Ipswich and Harwich arriving at the mainline Colchester North Station, from where it's a fifteen-minute walk south into town - follow North Station Road and its continuation North Hill until you reach the west end of the High Street. The bus station is off Queen Street, the northerly continuation of St Botolph's Street, and a couple of minutes' walk from the east end of High Street. You can get bus timetables here from the First Eastern National office (Mon-Fri 8.45am-5pm, Sat 9am-1pm; tel 01206/572478), which also sells Bus Ranger tickets (A?6) valid for a day's travel throughout much of East Anglia.

The tourist office is at 1 Queen St (April-Oct Mon-Sat 9.30am-6pm, Sun 10am-5pm; Nov-March Mon-Sat 10am-5pm; tel 01206/282920), at the east end of High Street, just behind the castle. As well as helping with accommodation, they sell leaflets detailing local walks and co-ordinate daily guided walks around town (June-Sept; A?2.50). You can rent a bike from Action Bikes, beside the Odeon Cinema on Crouch Street (tel 01206/541744; A?12/day) - a good way of getting out to see the nearby "Constable Country".

The Red Lion , 43 High St (tel 01206/577986; A?50-60), is another old-timer, a fifteenth-century timber building containing 24 modernized en-suite rooms. The Old Manse , 15 Roman Rd (tel 01206/545154, ; A?40-50), is the best of the many B&B options along Roman Road, with three pleasant guest rooms; Roman Road is on the east side of the Castle.
