Dorchester has two train stations , both of them to the south of the centre: trains from Weymouth and London arrive at Dorchester South, while Bristol trains use the Dorchester West station. Most buses stop around the car park on Acland Road, to the east of South Street. The tourist office is in Antelope Walk (April-Sept Mon-Sat 9am-5pm, Sun 10am-3pm; Oct Mon-Sat 9am-5pm; Nov-March Mon-Sat 9am-4pm; tel 01305/267992, ).

Dorchester has a good selection of accommodation , ranging from the superior Georgian Casterbridge Hotel , 49 High East St (tel 01305/264043, ; A?70-90), to such budget options as the King's Arms , also on High East St (tel 01305/265353; A?40-50), and the small Maumbury Cottage , 9 Maumbury Rd (tel 01305/266726; under A?40), near the Rings and the stations. The nearest youth hostel is at Litton Cheney (tel 01308/482340), halfway between Dorchester and Bridport.

When it comes to food , your best bet is a pub meal; try the King's Arms , or, on High West Street, the Royal Oak or Old Ship Inn .
