There's real coffee at the Spill the Beans Coffee House , 1 Market Hill (closed Sun), while Greens , in the ticket office at the steam railway station, serves vegetarian specials. TV chef and local lad Kevin Woodford has the island's highest culinary profile and runs a couple of restaurants in Douglas: the expensive Waterfront , at the top of North Quay (tel 01624/673222), and the moderate Blazers next door (same phone number). Further down the quayside, Tanroagan (tel 01624/472411; eve only) is the trendy choice for fish. La Posada , in the basement of the Admiral House Hotel on Loch Promenade (tel 01624/629551), is an authentic Spanish restaurant, whose dishes include a rich paella. Locals also like Paparazzi , 26 Loch Promenade, a large pizzeria-trattoria.

Manx-brewed beer is on sale at most pubs and brews such as "Old Bushy Tail" soon revive flagging spirits. Try it and others at the cosy Rovers Return , on Church Street, around the corner from Scott's Bistro . The wine-swilling Euro-crowd frequent the capacious Bar George , housed in a converted Sunday School at the end of Hill Street.
