The old Victorian train station and bus stop are both a five-minute walk from the clocktower, up Heol Penrallt and its continuation, Heol Doll. The tourist office (daily: Easter-Sept 9.30am-6pm; Oct-Easter 10am-5pm; tel 01654/702401) is next to the Glyndwr Parliament House on Heol Maengwyn. Bike rental is available from Greenstyles Cycles, 4 Heol Maengwyn near the clocktower (tel 01654/703543).

B&B accommodation includes the Maenllwyd , on Newtown Road, the eastern extension of Heol Maengwyn (tel 01654/702928, ; A?40-50), and Gwelfryn , in the town centre at 6 Greenfields, Bank Street (tel 01654/702532, ; under A?40). Best of the hotels is the wonderful, if slightly pricy, Wynnstay Arms , on Heol Maengwyn (tel 01654/702941; A?60-70). There's a lovely campsite three miles north, opposite the Centre for Alternative Technology, at Llwyngwern Farm (tel 01654/702492), or a very simple tent site at Plas Forge (tel 01654/703228), a mile or so out on the road to Dylife. There's a great hostel (tel 01654/761686; under A?40; March-Oct daily, Nov -Feb weekends only) six miles north in the slate village of Corris, easily reached by regular bus. There are plenty of cafA©s, restaurants and pubs in town, including a great wholefood shop and cafA© at Siop y Chwarel , opposite the Wynnstay Arms on Heol Maengwyn. The Wynnstay Arms does fantastic lunches and evening meals, and the Glyndwr , on Heol Doll, has live music at the weekend. The bar at Y Tabernacl is the most arty hangout in town.
