fiogf49gjkf0d The South West Coast Path
, the longest footpath in Britain, starts at Minehead and tracks the coastline as closely as it possibly can along Devon's northern seaboard, round Cornwall, back into Devon, and on to Dorset, where it finishes close to the entrance to Poole Harbour. The path was conceived in the 1940s, but it is only in the last twenty years that - barring a few significant gaps - the full
six-hundred-mile route
has been open, much of it on land owned by the National Trust, and all of it well signposted.
The relevant Ordnance Survey
maps
can be found at most village shops on the route, while many newsagents, bookshops and tourist offices will stock books or pamphlets containing route plans and details of local flora and fauna. Aurum Press (
) produces a series of four books using Ordnance Survey maps and describing different parts of the path, while the
South West Coast Path Association
publishes an annual guide (A?7) to the whole path, including accommodation lists, ferry timetables and transport details; contact them at Windlestraw, Penquit, Ermington, Devon PL21 0LU tel 01752/896237,
