Newquay is accessible by train via a branch line from Par, on the main Penzance line. The train station is off Cliff Road, a couple of hundred yards from the bus station on East Street, which itself is just across from the tourist office at Marcus Hill (May-Sept Mon-Sat 9.30am-5.30pm, Sun 9.30am-3.30pm; Oct-April Mon-Fri 9.30am-4.30pm, Sat 9.30am-12.30pm; tel 01637/854020, ). You can rent or buy surfing equipment from beach stalls or shops on Fore Street; ask at the tourist office for a list of places running courses, or which specialize in kite-surfing, land yachting, surf canoeing and paragliding.

There's no lack of accommodation in Newquay, though rooms can still be at a premium in July and August. In the centre of town, the Bay View House Hotel on Fore Street offers good value and superb views (tel 01637/871214; A?50-60; closed Nov-Easter), while fans of Fistral Beach will appreciate the proximity of Links Hotel on Headland Road (tel 01637/873211; A?40-50). The town has a choice of independent hostels offering dorm beds and some double rooms, including Newquay International Backpackers , 69 Tower Rd (tel 01637/879366, ); Home Surf Lodge , 18 Tower Rd (tel 01637/873387), and Matt's Surf Lodge , 110 Mount Wise Rd (tel 01637/874651, ). The numerous campsites in the area include Porth Beach (tel 01637/876531, ; closed Nov to mid-March), behind the beach of the same name to the east of town, and a little further back, on Trevelgue Road, Trevelgue (tel 01637/851851, ).

Most of the town's places to eat are pretty bland. The Lifebuoy is one of the best of the casual cafAŠs on Tower Road, and at the lattice-windowed Cottage , 38 Fore St, you'll find snacks and teas by day and Tex-Mex, steaks and salads in the upstairs restaurant in the evenings, with musical accompaniment (closed Sat lunch & all Sun). The Bay View House Hotel has a terrace cafAŠ open during the day and good-value evening meals. Newquay has become Cornwall's biggest nightclubbing centre: current hot spots are Berties on East Street, Sailors and the Beach on Fore Street, and Tall Trees on Tolcarne Road, though if you want to explore the livelier surfhead culture, ask around and watch the posters.
