Plymouth's train station is off Saltash Road, from where bus #25 leaves every fifteen minutes for the central Royal Parade. The bus station is just over St Andrew's Cross from Royal Parade, at Bretonside. The tourist office , off Sutton Harbour at 9 The Barbican (April-Oct Mon-Sat 9am-5pm, Sun 10am-4pm; Nov-March Mon-Fri 9am-5pm, Sat 10am-4pm; tel 01752/304849, ), has information about guided tours.

Most of the city's central accommodation lies a short walk from here: try first the row of B&Bs edging the Hoe on Citadel Road if you want to be near the sights, for example the Acorns and Lawns , 171 Citadel Rd (tel 01752/229474; under A?40), or The Beeches , at no. 175 (tel 01752/266475; under A?40). On the west side of the Hoe, the smart Bowling Green Hotel , 9-10 Osborne Place, Lockyer St (tel 01752/209090, ; A?40-50) overlooks Francis Drake's fabled haunt, while Osmond Guest House , 42 Pier St (tel 01752/229705; under A?40), is closer to the Great Western Docks, and offers a pick-up service from the bus and train stations. There are two hostels in town: Plymouth Backpackers Hotel , 172 Citadel Rd (tel 01752/225158, ), and, further out, Plymouth YHA , Belmont House, Devonport Rd (tel 01752/562189, ), for which walk a quarter-mile from Devonport train station, or catch a bus from the centre.

You'll find a wildly eclectic range of restaurants in and around Plymouth's Barbican area. One of the best places for fish is Piermaster's , at 3 Southside St (tel 01752/229345; closed Sun), whose kitchen is supplied straight from the nearby harbour. Across the road, the Barbican Pasta Bar attracts the crowds, while Notte Street, at the top of Southside, has the inexpensive Revival , a Mexican/Italian/American diner with lots of jazzy ambience. Plymouth Arts Centre , 38 Looe St, has a self-service vegetarian restaurant open until around 8pm, though the major reason for coming here is to see its films and live performances.

The Dolphinpub on Southside Street is a landmark in the Barbican, and is crowded with fishermen in the morning and locals and boisterous boozers at night; it also serves simple lunchtime snacks.
