There are no trains to Ross, but the bus station is handily located on Cantilupe Road, from where it's a couple of minutes' walk west to both the Market Place and the tourist office , on the corner of High and Edde Cross streets (Easter-Sept Mon-Sat 9am-5.30pm, Sun 10am-4pm; Oct-Easter closed Sun; tel 01989/562768). Ross is strong on B&Bs with perhaps the best being the Linden House , in a fetching, three-storey Georgian building opposite St Mary's at 14 Church St (tel 01989/565373; A?40-50). The six guest rooms, only one of which is en suite, are cosily decorated in a modern style and the breakfasts are delicious - both traditional and vegetarian. Another convenient choice - if a tad more frugal - is Vaga House , another well-maintained Georgian building, this one with oodles of flower boxes, located just below the tourist office on Wye Street (tel 01989/563024, vagahouse@hotmail.com ; under A?40). The nearest camping is the Broadmeadow Caravan Park , occupying a field on the northeast edge of Ross beside the ring road (tel 01989/768076; closed Oct-March). Bikes can be rented from Revolutions on Broad Street (tel 01989/562639). The main cultural event is the Ross International Festival (tel 01989/563330, ), a mixed bag of music, theatre and dance held over two weeks at the back end of August.

Restaurants range from the Oat Cuisine , a straightforward daytime wholefood cafAŠ at 41 Broad St, to the Cloisters Wine Bar , 24 High St (tel 01989/567717; eve only), serving a wide range of meat and fish dishes in a candlelit interior. Even better, a few paces further along High Street, is the excellent, reasonably priced Meader's (tel 01989/562803), which specializes in Hungarian dishes. Of the pubs , the ancient, oak-beamed Eagle Inn , on Broad Street, is the most appealing, though the Man of Ross , at the top of Wye Street, runs it close and serves good pub food.
