Trains arrive half a mile west of the centre, on South Western Road; the bus station is a short way north of the Market Place, on Endless Street.

The tourist office is on Fish Row, just off the Market Place (May, June & Sept Mon-Sat 9.30am-6pm, Sun 10.30am-4.30pm; July & Aug Mon-Sat 9.30am-7pm, Sun 10.30am-5pm; Oct-April Mon-Sat 9.30am-5pm; tel 01722/334956) and is the starting point for informative and inexpensive guided walks of the city.

Salisbury has a good range of accommodation to suit all pockets. One of the best is the Old Mill Hotel , Town Path, Harnham (tel 01722/327517; A?70-90), a riverside pub about a mile from the centre, with great views across the meadows to the cathedral. Less expensive options include Victoria Lodge , 61 Castle Rd (tel 01722/320586, ; A?50-60), one of several good-value B&Bs along the main road to Stonehenge, and Glen Lyn , 6 Bellamy Lane, Milford Hill (tel 01722/327880, glen.lyn@btinternet.com ; A?40-50), an elegant Victorian guest house in a quiet lane ten minutes east of the centre. Among the more central options, try Town House , 1 Bridge St (tel 01722/415386; A?40-50), a modern pub with bland but clean rooms upstairs, or the Old Bakery , 35 Bedwin St (tel 01722/320100; under A?40), an oak-beamed, 500-year-old building - there's no breakfast, hence the low rates. There are two hostels in town: Matt and Tiggy's at 51 Salt Lane (tel 01722/327443), which offers eighteen beds in three properties (one a 450-year-old cottage) close to the bus station, and Salisbury YHA (tel 01722/327572, ), a 220-year-old building in its own spacious grounds, ten minutes' east of the cathedral at Milford Hill.

For food and drink , sample the good-value, traditional English fare at Harper's , Market Square (tel 01722/333118), or the pub grub at the atmospheric Haunch of Venison , Minster Street, where you'll find the mummified hand of a nineteenth-century card player still clutching his cards. For something more upmarket, head for LXIX , 69 New St (tel 01722/340000), very close to the cathedral, an elegant and expensive modern restaurant with a cheaper bistro next door. The Michael Snell Tea Room , 8 St Thomas's Square, is an established and popular patisserie in the city centre, with outdoor tables, and Moloko CafAŠ , 5 Bridge St, offers coffees and cocktails, as well as croissants, panini and salads.
