The pubs listed below are those with a bit of character and staying power, but for the best insight into what makes Sheffield tick as a party destination take a night-time walk along Division Street and West Street where competing theme and retro bars go in and out of fashion. The Crucible, Lyceum and Studio theatres in Tudor Square (tel 0114/276 9922) put on a full programme of theatre, dance, comedy and concerts. The Showroom, 7 Paternoster Row (tel 0114/275 7727), is the biggest independent cinema outside London. Major gigs are held at two edge-of-town stadium venues : Don Valley Stadium on Worksop Road (tel 0114/278 9199), and Arena, Broughton Lane (tel 0114/256 5656). Friday's Sheffield Telegraph lists the week's performances, events, concerts and films; look out also for the Dirty Stop Out's Guide , a comprehensive listings' booklet, available at the tourist office.

The Washington 79 Fitzwilliam St. A good pub with good beer that's a favoured muso's hangout. Just two minutes from Division Street.
