Most of Skagway's bars and restaurants line the touristy part of Broadway. A few blocks away, at the corner of Sixth Avenue and Broadway, the Days of 98 Show is an entertaining historical musical about Soapy Smith ($12).

Corner CafAŠ State St at 4th Ave tel 907/983-2155. Daytime diner much favored by Skagway's outdoor set serving stuffed croissants with salad or soup for $7, or halibut burger for $8.

Mabel G Smith's 342 5th Ave at Broadway tel 907/983-2609. Low-key espresso bar with the best coffee in town and glazed pumpkin cookies that have a reputation throughout the north.

Red Onion Saloon Broadway at 2nd Ave tel 907/983-2222. An 1898 bar and former bordello with heaps of character, draft beers and excellent pizza.

Stowaway CafAŠ 205 Congress Way tel 907/982-3463. Quality daytime take-outs such as hot soup (from $3), wraps or a blackened chicken Caesar ($5.50), then evening meals with harbor views: expect seafood gumbo ($17), sweet and sour vegetables ($15), and pecan pie ($6).
