One of the most exciting things about Valdez is getting here; both car and ferry rides are unforgettable. The Richardson Highway holds epic scenery: restful alpine meadows, angry-looking waterfalls, mountain glaciers, the icy summit of Thompson Pass and the waterfall-fringed Keystone Canyon . Alaskon Express, based at the Westmark Hotel , 100 Fidalgo Drive (tel 907/835-4391), plies the ten-hour route to Anchorage daily in high season for $71. Ferries from Cordova, Whittier or Seward dock at the end of Hazelet Avenue (tel 907/835-4436). If the weather is clear, the ride offers superb views of the Columbia Glacier. ERA/Alaska Airlines flies two to four times daily to Anchorage (one-way $85) from the airport five miles north. From there, taxis (tel 907/835-2500) run downtown for around $5.

The central visitor center (summer daily 8am-8pm; tel 907/835-4636 or 1-800/770-5954, ) is at 200 Fairbanks St.
