Downtown Montgomery is dotted with cheap cafAŠs selling burgers or soul food; a few minutes' drive southeast, suburban Cloverdale offers a good selection of eating places to suit every price range. Especially in the center, things get quiet at night.

Amy's Young House 231 N Hull St tel 334/262-0409. Southern cooking in an 1850 house, next to the visitor center and Old Alabama Town. Serves lunch only.

Farmers' Market CafAŠ 315 N McDonough St tel 334/262-9163. Just off downtown, next to the busy marketplace, this is Montgomery's best spot for Southern-style breakfasts. Mon-Fri 5.30am-2pm.

Jubilee Seafood Co 1057 Woodley Rd, Cloverdale tel 334/262-6224. Tiny fish restaurant that serves an extensive and deliciously creative menu for less than $20 for two entrees. Closed Sun & Mon.

Martha's Place 458 Sayre St tel 334/263-9135. Superb downtown Southern food, from collard greens to fried chicken. Serves lunch only; closed Sat.

Vintage Year 405 Cloverdale Rd, Cloverdale tel 334/264-8463. One of Alabama's most highly rated restaurants, with haute cuisine for $30 plus (two entrees). Dinner only, reservations recommended; closed Sun & Mon.
