Downtown Selma is very short of inexpensive places to stay ; if the grand St James Hotel , close to the river at 1200 Water Ave (tel 334/872-3234; $100-130), is beyond your budget, head for the Holiday Inn , three miles west on US-80 at 1806 W Highland Ave (tel 334/872-0461; $50-75). Among the pick of the soul-food restaurants is the unfriendly Downtowner , 1114 Selma Ave (tel 334/872-5933), open for breakfast and lunch but beware, you may not get served if you're from New York. Major Grumbles , near the St James at 1 Grumbles Alley (tel 334/872-2006), is an upmarket riverside pub with hot sandwiches such as the almondine flounder, but don't be put off by the disturbing "Indian giant" skeleton draped in a Confederate flag. The visitor center at 2207 Broad St (Mon-Sat 8am-8pm; tel 334/875-7485), north of town at the junction with Hwy-22, has tour brochures for the Historic District and black heritage sites.
