Although most of the more famous restaurants in Palm Springs are ultra-expensive, more reasonable options can be found with a little effort; alternatively, head to gay-oriented Cathedral City ("Cat City"), five miles east along Hwy-111.

Agua Bar & Grill 110 N Indian Canyon Drive tel 760/778-1515. Elegant setting with fine American/eclectic menu and swank piano bar. Located at downtown's Spa Resort Casino.

El Gallito 68820 Grove St, Cathedral City tel 760/328-7794. Busy Mexican cantina that has the best food for miles and often a wait to match - get there around 6pm to avoid the crowds. Closed in Aug.

Las Casuelas 368 N Palm Canyon Dr tel 760/325-3213. Local Mexican favorite popular for its hefty portions and laid-back atmosphere. The best bet in a local chain.

Le Vallauris 385 W Tahquitz Way, next to Desert Museum tel 760/325-5059 - reservations only. Excellent Californian/French/Italian hybrid dishes, though the price is around $80 per head, with a swank atmosphere popular with faded movie stars.

Native Foods 1775 E Palm Canyon Drive tel 760/416-0070. One of the town's better and cheaper choices for vegetarian cuisine, offering natural ingredients and healthy meals that even manage to be tasty on occasion.

Shame on the Moon 69950 Frank Sinatra Drive, Rancho Mirage tel 760/324-5515. Pasta, seafood and meat on a mid-priced menu, in a contemporary setting that attracts an upscale gay clientele. Excellent service.

Thai Smile 651 N Palm Canyon Drive tel 760/320-5503. Uninspiring decor but great, authentic Thai food, especially good for curry and noodle dishes, all at very reasonable prices. Open daily.
