Greyhound buses from LA and San Francisco stop every two hours downtown at 34 W Carrillo St; trains arrive at the old Southern Pacific station at 209 State St, a block west of US-101. The visitors centers are at 12 E Carrillo St (Mon-Sat 9am-5pm; tel 805/966-9222 or 1-800/676-1266, ) and 1 Santa Barbara St, East Beach (Mon-Sat 9am-5pm, Sun 10am-5pm; tel 805/965-3021). You can walk to most places, although a frequent shuttle bus (25? per ride) loops around Santa Barbara during the day, with the Santa Barbara Metropolitan Transit District (tel 805/683-3702, ) covering the outlying areas into the evening.

Although there are a few reasonable places to stay in town, most hotels are expensive and hard to find. The nearest useful camping spots are ten miles south of Santa Barbara at Carpinteria State Beach (tel 805/684-2811 or 1-800/444-7275; $18), and El Capitan State Beach to the north (tel 805/968-1033 or 1-800/444-7275; $18).

Banana Bungalow Hostel 210 E Ortega St tel 805/963-0154 or 1-800/3-HOSTEL, bananabungalow.com/sub/bbsb.html. Dorm beds here are both cheap and comfortable ($18), if you don't mind a nonstop party atmosphere. Up to $35.

Bayberry Inn 111 W Valerio St tel 805/569-3398, . Lovely little spot offering eight comfortable B&B rooms decked out with canopy beds and Victorian furnishings, each named after a type of berry. $160-200.

Cheshire Cat B&B 36 W Valerio St tel 805/569-1610, . Fairly upscale spot with hot tubs, free bike use and an Alice-in-Wonderland theme. $130-160.

Harbor View Inn 28 W Cabrillo Blvd tel 805/963-0780 or 1-800/755-0222. Casually luxurious option with pleasant rooms and a quiet, elegant atmosphere. $160-200.

Hotel State Street 121 State St tel 805/966-6586. An old mission-style establishment located near the beach and offering complimentary breakfast. $35-50.
