There is no road access to Cordova; daily flights from Anchorage and Juneau land at the airport twelve miles down the Copper River Highway. A bus runs from the airport for $10. Thrice-weekly ferries dock a mile north of town. The tiny Chamber of Commerce office is on First Street (summer only Mon-Fri 10am-5.30am; tel 907/424-7260, ).

Cordova has no hostel and the only tent camping close to town is at the scruffy Odiak Camper Park on Whitshed Road, half a mile south of town (tel 907/424-6200; $3 per person). The cheapest option is the low standard Alaskan Hotel , 600 First St (tel 907/424-3299; $50-75), though you may prefer the Northern Nights Inn , 501 Third Ave (tel 907/424-5356; $75-100), or the Cordova Rose Lodge , 1315 Whitshed Rd, a mile east of downtown (tel 907/424-7673; $75-100), built into a permanently dry-docked barge filled with nautical artifacts.

For food , check out the popular Killer Whale CafA© on First Street (tel 907/424-7733), above the Orca Bookshop, or the superb seafood at the pricier Reluctant Fisherman Inn , 407 Railroad Ave (tel 907/424-3272). Wash it all down afterwards with a drink at the Alaskan Hotel 's bar .
