New Haven lies where the interstates I-91 and I-95 fork, and is on the main train line between Washington and Boston; services also run to Canada and New York. The Amtrak terminal is in the colossal and nicely renovated Union Station , on Union Avenue six blocks southeast of the Yale campus downtown. To or from New York, the Metro-North Commuter Railroad (tel 203/497-2089 or 1-800/638-7646) is a better deal than Amtrak. Greyhound, Bonanza and Peter Pan buses from Boston arrive at 45 George St (tel 203/772-2470). On arrival, it's advisable to catch a cab to your hotel, as the bus and train terminals are in potentially dodgy areas. One reputable firm is Metro Taxi (tel 203/777-7777).

Public transportation to areas outside downtown is provided by Connecticut Transit (tel 203/624-0151, ), 470 James St, but service is poor after 6pm. An information booth at 200 Orange St, two blocks east of the Green (the town's park), has schedules (Mon-Fri 9am-5pm). The Greater New Haven CVB is at 59 Elm St (Mon-Fri 8.30am-5pm; tel 203/777-8550 or 1-800/332-STAY, ).
