Eating in the Old Town is expensive, and a number of its cafA©s and restaurants are closed in the evening. Many people head out to the oceanfront places for dinner, or settle instead for a long night's drinking at one of the nice old bars.

A1A Ale Works 1 King St tel 904/829-2977. The convivial, good-looking bar/restaurant is popular with locals for its excellent, creative New World cuisine and home-brewed beers.

The Bunnery 121 St George St tel 904/829-6166. Tempting homemade food is served on a relaxing courtyard of this old Spanish bakery.

Columbia 98 St George St tel 904/824-3341. Lively New Orleans atmosphere, with a traditional Spanish/Cuban menu all served up in a sumptuous setting of fountains and candlelit arcades.

Mill Top Tavern 19 1/2 George St tel 904/829-2329. This historic local bar, with deck seating, in a nineteenth-century mill boasts a great view of the Castillo and harbor. Excellent live music helps make the place a local favorite.
