Savannah has a large number of restaurants , with some great seafood places on the riverfront . The City Market , a couple of blocks south of W Factors Walk, is also a prime restaurant district, with a clutch of stylish New American places.

Bistro Savannah 309 W Congress St tel 912/233-6266. Near the City Market, the mainly seafood menu here is worthy of more expensive restaurants.

City Market CafAŠ 224 W St Julian St tel 912/236-7133. A good lunch stop; try the excellent sandwiches.

Gallery Espresso 6 E Liberty St tel 912/233-5348. Dim, arty, super-hip coffee bar with exquisite cakes, crumpets and muffins, vegetarian food and soup, along with the best coffee in town (try the Iced Thai) and wine. Open until 11pm.

Garibaldi's 315 W Congress St tel 912/232-7118. Lovely decor - cherry-red walls, pressed tin ceiling, fairy lights and gold mirrors - with a chatty crowd and great Northern Italian dishes, nouvelle cuisine and seafood. The specialty is grilled flounder, deliciously succulent with a crispy coating. Serves dinner only.

Huey's 115 E River St tel 912/234-7385. Riverfront restaurant serving excellent, authentic Cajun/Creole food; go straight for the Oysters Rockefeller. Live music wafts in from the adjoining bar, and there's a jazz brunch at weekends.

Moon River Brewing Co 21 W Bay St tel 912/447-0943. Brewpub near the riverfront, with solid American food and a good beer selection.

Mrs Wilkes' Boarding House 107 W Jones St tel 912/232-5997. Savannah's most famous eating place, a real Southern experience run by the redoubtable Mrs Wilkes, and serving all-you-can-eat breakfasts (8-9am; $6) and lunches (11am-3pm; $12) only. Everyone sits around large tables, helping themselves to delicious mounds of fried chicken, sweet potatoes, spinach, beans and spaghetti. There's no sign outside; just get there early and join the line.

Nita's Place 129 E Broughton St tel 912/238-8233. Friendly soul-food restaurant at the eastern edge of downtown, open for lunch only with an $8 fried chicken special.

The Shrimp Factor 313 E River St tel 912/236-4229. Good and unusual shrimp dishes on the waterfront, with typical entrees like Shrimp Stuffed Savannah for $21.95.

Voo-Doo CafAŠ 321 Habersham tel 912/447-1999. Arty cafAŠ serving a full range of Spanish/ American fare.
