Savannah's nightlife is laid-back, if unusually strict about requiring ID. Everything is fairly close together, ranged between the City Market and the river. There's an annual jazz festival in late September. The Pirate's House , Hannah's East/45 South 20 E Broad St tel 912/233-5757. Cool jazz in an informal atmosphere. Jazz veteran Ben Tucker plays with a variety of big names after 9pm upstairs in Hannah's East . For American fine dining head for the 45 South room.

Rail Pub 405 W Congress St tel 912/238-1311. Lively, endearingly shabby multilevel bar frequented by a young crowd near the market.

Savannah Blues 411 W Congress St tel 912/447-5044. City Market club that features live blues nightly from 10pm.

606 East CafAŠ 319 W Congress St tel 912/233-2887. Funky student hangout with dance floor, pool tables and drag acts, as well as inexpensive entrees ($6-16).

Velvet Elvis 127 W Congress St tel 912/236-0665. Vintage beerhall, decorated to match the name, near City Market. Live jazz, indie rock, ska or R&B Wed-Sat, plus a "Steamy Seafood Patio" serving salads and shellfish.
