Lawrence's nightlife is dominated by students, found in their droves along Massachusetts Street. One of the better places to investigate is Liberty Hall at 642 Massachusetts St (tel 745/749-1912). Once a social and political center, this building housed Lawrence's first newspaper until it was burned down by pro-slavery agitators in 1863. Today it puts on art-house films, plays and concerts.

Buffalo Bob's Smokehouse 719 Massachusetts St tel 785/841-6400. Hickory-smoked barbecue pork, chicken and ribs for those who can't wait until Kansas City. Tater curl french fries and apple fritters included.

Free State Brewing Co 636 Massachusetts St tel 785/843-4555. Trendy brewpub serving award-winning amber beer and robust steaks.

Jazzhaus 926 Massachusetts St tel 785/749-3320. As the name suggests, this dimly lit bar hosts weekend jazz gigs.

Paradise CafAŠ 728 Massachusetts St tel 785/842-5199. Veggie burgers, soups, salads, fish specials and breakfast too.

Teller's 746 Massachusetts St tel 785/843-4111. Excellent nachos and pizza served in a beautifully restored bank building.

Yellow Sub 624 W 12th St tel 785/841-3268. Good sandwiches and lunch specials in a laid-back atmosphere with sweeping views. It's campus location keeps it busy during the school year.
