The Kentucky Center for the Arts , 501 W Main between Fifth and Sixth avenues (tel 502/584-7777 or 1-800/775-7777), and fronted by several outlandish sculptures, is Louisville's main venue for high culture. The Actors' Theatre of Louisville at 316 W Main St (tel 502/584-1205), meanwhile, has a national reputation for its new productions. As for drinking and live music , the two-mile strip around Bardstown Road and Baxter Avenue (bus #17) is punctuated by fun bars and restaurants; the best gay clubs are on the eastern edge of downtown.

Connections 130 S Floyd St tel 502/585-5752. The pick of Louisville's gay scene. At weekends this giant club, complete with terrace garden, holds over 2000.

Molly Malone's 933 Baxter Ave tel 502/473-1222. Fun Irish pub and restaurant with live music on the weekends.

Phoenix Hill Tavern 644 Baxter Ave tel 502/589-4957. Big bar with four different areas that gets in occasional national touring acts.

Stevie Ray's 230 E Main St tel 502/582-9945. As the name suggests, a rocking loud blues bar.

Twice Told Coffeehouse 1604 Bardstown Rd tel 502/456-0507. Cozy singer-songwriter venue that often gets noted names and surprise appearances.
