Natchitoches lies 150 miles northeast of Lafayette, on Hwy-6 off I-49. Greyhound comes in on the southeast side of town, on Hwy-1; the town has no public transportation or taxis, so to avoid being stranded, you should reserve accommodation in advance at a B&B , and arrange to be collected. One of the most appealing is the Judge Porter House at 321 Second St (tel 318/352-9206 or 1-800/441-8343, ; $100-130), with its romantic porch and antique-stuffed rooms; Chateau d'Terre , just outside of downtown Natchitoches at 109 Jamar Drive (tel 318/354-7929 or 1-888/798-6599, ; $100-130), offers a tranquil lake view and an endless supply of delicious cookies and biscuits.

The visitor center , 781 Front St (Mon-Fri 8am-6pm, Sat 9am-5pm, Sun 10am-3pm; tel 1-800/259-1714, ), provides self-guided tours and can help find accommodation. The best place to eat is Lasyone's Meat Pie Kitchen (Mon-Sat 7am-6.30pm; tel 318/352-3353), around the corner at 622 Second St, which specializes in meat pies (spicy, flaky and lightly fried), cream pies, red beans and sausage, and fresh, crumbly cornbread.
