Greyhound buses stop at 250 Greyhound Court on the east side of town by Hwy-52. Amtrak lays on buses to the Salem Inn for the short ride from the nearest station in Greensboro. Winston-Salem's resourceful visitor center is on the north edge of downtown at 601 N Cherry St (tel 910/777-3796 or 1-800/331-7018, ).

Brookstown Inn , 200 Brookstown Ave (tel 336/725-1120 or 1-800/845-4262, fax 336/773-0147; $130-160), is a highly recommended small hotel in a former cotton warehouse, dishing up complimentary cheese and wine, cookies and milk, and continental breakfast. A less expensive option across the street, the Salem Inn , 127 S Cherry St (tel 336/725-8561 or 1-800/533-8760, fax 336/725-2318, ; $75-100), offers clean and central motel rooms.

Eating options aren't that exciting, though the Twin City Diner , 1425 W First St (tel 336/724-4462), is a popular place for sandwiches and grill food. The more upmarket Bistro 420 , 420 W 4th St (tel 336/721-1336), serves good southern cuisine. The Village Tavern , in Reynolda Village (tel 336/748-0221), is a great spot for a beer and some pub food. Touring roots, rock and reggae bands play the atmospheric Ziggy's , 433 Baity St (tel 336/748-0810), out by Wake Forest University campus.
