At first sight, corporate chains seem to dominate Cleveland - especially in the Flats - but the city has many culinary delights, many of them ethnic. The
West Side Market
in Ohio City is one of the best places for cheap and unusual picnic food, but there are also some excellent (if pricey) fine-dining restaurants downtown. Little Italy and the Coventry Village area, both just east of University Circle, are worth exploring for authentic food and coffee bars, respectively. The
Arabica
chain also serves up good quality espresso at locations around the city, and can be found downtown at 856 Euclid Ave (tel 216/771-6869).

Flat Iron CafA© 1114 Center St tel 216/696-6968. The landmark tavern on the east (downtown) bank of the Flats, with an Irish-American edge, serves up good sandwiches, salads and desserts, plus a smooth pint of Guinness. Hornblower's Barge & Grille 1151 N Marginal Rd tel 216/363-1151. Reasonable-value pastas, sandwiches and seafood are offered in a good location overlooking Lake Erie and a short stroll from the Rock Hall. Mama Santa 12301-05 Mayfield Rd tel 216/231-9567. Unpretentious and inexpensive southern Italian home cooking in Little Italy. Nate's Deli & Restaurant 1923 W 25th St tel 216/696-7529. This daytime Middle Eastern cafA© serves great gyros and plenty of vegetarian dishes. The hummus, in particular, has quite a reputation. Ruthie & Moe's Diner 4002 Prospect Ave tel 216/431-8063. This clean, friendly, traditional diner is well worth the 5min drive from downtown for its breakfasts, lunches and huge desserts. Tommy's 1824 Coventry Rd tel 216/321-7757. Great-value food, much of it Middle Eastern vegetarian, is dished up in a trendy, bright setting in lively Coventry Village. Try the famous shakes and check out the adjoining used bookstore. Watermark Restaurant 1250 Old River Rd tel 216/241-1600. An excellent and extensive seafood menu is offered in a classy Flats location overlooking the river.
