fiogf49gjkf0d For after-dark entertainment, the
Flats
area boasts the greatest conglomeration of drinking, live music and dancing venues, although they tend to be cheesier than their counterparts in the
Warehouse District
and the more bohemian
Ohio City
across the river. Five miles east, both the
University Circle
and the youthful
Coventry Village
neighborhoods have good venues and bars, though the Circle contains no-go zones you shouldn't wander into. Cleveland's
rave
scene remains strong and mostly underground; if you're interested, look for flyers at Record Revolution (tel 216/321-7661), 1828 Coventry Rd. As for more refined entertainment, the
Cleveland Opera
(tel 216/575-0900,
) and
Ballet
(tel 216/861-5545) perform in
Playhouse Square Center
(tel 216/241-6000), which also hosts drama. The well-respected
Cleveland Orchestra
(tel 216/231-1111) is based in University Circle at Severance Hall, 11001 Euclid Ave, close to the leading regional theater of the
Cleveland Play House
(tel 216/795-7000). For
what's on
information, try one of Cleveland's two free weeklies: the well-written
Free Times
covers all of the arts, while
Scene
concentrates mostly on music.
The Basement
1078 Old River Rd tel 216/344-0001. Dance club on the Flats east bank, voted the city's best four years running, offers Eighties music and occasional concerts.
Club Isabella
2025 University Hospitals Drive, University Circle tel 216/229-1177. The popular, reasonably priced Italian restaurant features live jazz.
Great Lakes Brewing Co
2516 Market St, Ohio City tel 216/771-4404. At this famous old joint, Cleveland's best brewpub, the huge mahogany bar still bears the bullet holes made during a 1920s shootout involving lawman Elliot Ness.
Grog Shop
1765 Coventry Rd, Cleveland Heights tel 216/321-5588. The dark, dank and sweaty collegiate punk and alternative venue is near Coventry Village.
Harbor Inn
1219 Main Ave tel 216/241-3232. Go to a great old-fashioned bar amid the hyped chain outfits of the Flats for 180 beers, video games and lots of character.
Mercury Lounge
1392 W 6th St tel 216/566-8840. This hip new martini lounge in the warehouse district tends to attract Cleveland's fashionable.
