The Short North and German Village neighborhoods are crammed with places to eat , be they bottom-dollar snack bars or stylish and adventurous bistros. For a wide range of ethnic and organic snacks during the day, try the North Market downtown at 59 Spruce St (Tues-Fri 9am-7pm, Sat 8am-5pm, Sun noon-5pm; tel 614/463-9664), which also sells fresh produce.

Barcelona 263 E Whittier St, German Village tel 614/444-1130. Noted for its tapas and desserts, this stylishly decorated local favorite also does tasty Mediterranean entrees.

Cap City Fine Diner 1299 Olentangy River Rd tel 614/291-3663. A self-proclaimed "upscale diner," this big, lively joint just off downtown serves up traditional food (meatloaf) with new twists (chili-onion rings and buttermilk mash). Huge portions, especially the desserts; lunch entrees around $8, dinner $14.

Cup O' Joe Coffee & Dessert House 627 S 3rd St, German Village tel 614/221-1JOE. Voted Columbus's best coffee house, it offers great desserts and coffees and comfy sofas.

Katzinger's 475 S 3rd St, German Village tel 614/228-3354. A mesmerizing range of sandwiches, Jewish munchies and cheesecakes, though prices are high for a deli.

Out on Main 122 E Main St tel 614/224-9520. Newish gay-themed restaurant with fabulous atmosphere and a great menu to match. Planet Hollywood esque exhibits include Melissa Etheridge's guitar, Greg Louganis's Speedo and a Liberace display.

Schmidt's Restaurant und Sausage Haus 240 E Kossuth St, German Village tel 614/444-6808. The Columbus landmark (since 1886) serves schnitzel and strudel in a former slaughterhouse.

Tapatio 491 N Park St, Short North tel 614/221-1085. Inventive Caribbean and South American food and a great patio.
