Not long ago, Columbus was being tipped as "the next Seattle"; while that didn't happen, this youthful university town has a rich source of local bands , from country revivalists to experimental alternative acts. In addition to the German Village, the gay scene is concentrated in the Short North on and around North High Street, with a few additional bars and clubs downtown - the biweekly OUTlook has complete listings. On most summer Friday evenings there are free concerts in downtown Bicentennial Park on the Scioto River. The Other Paper and Columbus Alive provide free details of what's happening.
