With its recent cultural resurgence, Pittsburgh's nightlife offers rich pickings in everything from the classics to jazz and alternative rock. The nationally regarded City Theater, 57 S 13th St (tel 412/431-4900), puts on groundbreaking productions in a converted South Side church. The widely traveled Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra plays at the Heinz Hall, 600 Penn Ave (tel 412/392-4900), and the city's ballet, dance and opera companies perform at the downtown Benedum Center for the Performing Arts, 7th Street and Penn Avenue (tel 412/456-6666). City Paper , a free weekly newspaper published on Wednesdays, has extensive listings .

Bloomfield Bridge Tavern 4412 Liberty Ave tel 412/682-8611. Super-friendly Polish local pub just over the bridge from Oakland. Live music Thurs-Sat, from punk to polka, and there's also food - mostly greasy stuff, though the potato pancakes are great when washed down with vodka.

Club CafA© 56 S 12th St tel 412/431-4950. Laid-back South Side club with regular live (often acoustic) music.

Club Laga 3609 Forbes Ave tel 412/687-4636. Large, loud student disco that also hosts live rock bands of some standing.

Dee's 1314 Carson St tel 412/431-5400. South Side institution; great jukebox, pool, darts and a lively crowd.

M 1600 Smallman St tel 412/261-2232. Huge, popular Strip District dance club (mainly techno and industrial) that also promotes some live rock. Next door to Rosebud .

Nick's Fat City 1601 E Carson St tel 412/481-6880. Popular South Side pool bar with (usually) good live bands. Happy hour 10pm-midnight.

Rosebud 1650 Smallman St tel 412/261-2221. Generally considered Pittsburgh's best music venue, this atmospheric bar/restaurant features acoustic, rockabilly and indie acts.

The Sharp Edge 302 S St Clair tel 412/661-3537. Friendly beer emporium on the edge of Shadyside with good food and hundreds of imported and American beers, including cask ales. The jukebox plays rock tunes and there's sports on TV.

Smokin' Joe's 2001 E Carson St tel 412/431-6757. One of the South Side's most congenial bars, with a vast range of beers on tap and over 200 bottled brands.

31st St Pub 3101 Penn Ave tel 412/391-8334. It won't win any prizes for decor, but this place draws a crowd to hear up-and-coming local indie and hardcore bands and the odd underground celebrity act from out of town.
