T.F. Green Airport (tel 401/737-4000 or 1-888/268-7222) is in Warwick, nine miles south of Providence. In town, the Amtrak station (daily 5am-10.30pm; tel 401/351-8983 or 1-800/250-4989) is at 100 Gaspee St, in a domed building a short walk southwest of the capitol. Greyhound and Bonanza (tel 401/751-8800 or 1-888/751-8800) buses stop downtown at Kennedy Plaza, while Plymouth & Brockton (tel 508/746-0378, ) buses stop considerably further out at 1 Bonanza Way, exit 25 off I-95. Bus transportation within the city, and to the rest of the state, is provided by RIPTA (Mon-Fri 6.30am-10pm, Sat 9am-11pm, Sun 11am-6.30pm; tel 401/781-9400 or 1-800/244-0444, ), with most local and all long-distance buses leaving from Kennedy Plaza, where schedules are available from a rarely staffed information booth (Mon-Fri 7am-6pm). However, sightseeing is best done on foot. RIPTA also runs a daily ferry service between Providence and Newport from mid-April through October ($8 round-trip). To get to Block Island , contact Island Hi-Speed Ferry ($14 each way; tel 1-877/733-9425, ) at the State Pier, Port of Galilee. There are dozens of hotels, inns and cottages on the resort island; the Block Island Tourism Council (tel 1-800/383-BIRI, ) can help.

The CVB , 1 W Exchange St (Mon-Fri 10am-5pm; tel 401/274-1636 or 1-800/233-1636, ), provides maps and brochures, as does the useful Providence Preservation Society , in the 1772 Shakespeare's Head building at 21 Meeting St, which has self-guided walking tours of the city's historic areas (Mon-Fri 9am-5pm; tel 401/831-7440, ) or 90-minute guided tours ($12) every Friday from April to October. There's another information center in the Roger Williams National Memorial Park Zoo, 282 N Main St (daily: summer 9am-5pm; rest of year 9am-4.30pm; tel 401/785-3510).
