Lubbock has a surprising variety of eating places , with good barbecue and Tex-Mex and even some New American restaurants, with a particular concentration along Buddy Holly Avenue (Avenue H). However, many of even the most upmarket restaurants close before 10pm.

Abuelo's 4401 82nd St tel 806/794-1762. Lubbock's best Mexican restaurant, with some great fish dishes, punch-packing margaritas, and live music on the patio in summer.

The County Line half a mile west of I-27 in Escondido Canyon tel 806/763-6001. First-rate barbecue in Lubbock, with all-you-can-eat specials for around $15. Outside, ducks and peacocks saunter around freely.

Hub City Brewpub 1807 Buddy Holly Ave tel 806/747-1535. Lively and youthful, with decent grill food and beers.

Pancake House 510 Ave Q tel 806/765-8506. Popular downtown joint for breakfast.

Santa Fe 401 Ave Q tel 806/763-6114. Bulging enchiladas, gargantuan burritos and standard Tex-Mex favorites, in a peaceful family atmosphere.
