Acacia 3325 W Cary St tel 804/354-6060. Quality regional cuisine with alfresco dining at this highly-rated Carytown establishment; good range of meats in barbecue and other flavorful sauces. Closed Sun & Mon.

Awful Arthur's Oyster Bar 101 N 18th St tel 804/643-1700. Shockoe Bottom hangout, with raw oysters and clams, shrimp and crabs, and steak for those not wanting seafood. All budgets catered for.

Millie's Diner 2603 E Main St tel 804/643-5512. Refurbished diner, complete with mini-jukeboxes on each table, somewhat adrift of downtown beyond Shockoe Bottom. A changing menu of fairly expensive but very tasty meals.

Peking Pavilion 1302 E Cary St tel 804/649-8888. Very good, inexpensive (especially at lunchtime) Chinese restaurant in Shockoe Slip serving Szechuan and Mandarin specialties. There's also a branch at 5710 Grove Ave in the West End.

Penny Lane 207 N 7th St tel 804/780-1682. British-style establishment with a full menu of grills and other pub grub, plus a full range of English and other beers, and soccer on TV.

Strawberry Street CafAŠ 421 N Strawberry St tel 804/353-6860. Casual and comfortable Fan District neighborhood cafAŠ offering mainly quiches, pastas and salads.

Third Street Diner 218 E Main St tel 804/788-4750. Relaxed 24hr diner with particularly good breakfasts and Greek dishes. Stylish student crowd, especially at night when it's also a bar.

The Tobacco Company 1201 E Cary St tel 804/782-9431. Inventive New American food in a stunningly restored three-story tobacco warehouse, with antique elevator. Cocktail bar with nightly live entertainment in the leafy ground-floor atrium.
