Greyhound stops at 1017 Laskin Rd, off 31st Street, while the Amtrak bus connection from Newport News arrives at 19th Street and Pacific Avenue. The visitor center is at the east end of I-264, half a mile west of the beach on 21st Street (daily: summer 9am-8pm, winter 9am-5pm; tel 757/437-4888 or 1-800/446-8038). Beach trolleys are the best mode of transportation in the area; there are four different routes covering the city, the most useful being up and down Atlantic Avenue (daily noon-midnight; 50A?; tel 757/222-6100).

Virginia Beach has one great boon for budget travelers - just a block from the beach, there are dorm beds from $18 (YHA members $14.50) and bargain B&B singles and doubles at HI-Angie's Guest Cottage Hostel , 302 24th St (tel 757/428-4690, ; up to $35-75). Typical rates at the seafront hotels tend to approach $100 in summer, with cheaper options at the appealingly old-styled Thunderbird Motor Lodge at 35th and Oceanfront (tel 757/428-3024 or 1-800/633-6669; $50-75), which also has a nice cafAŠ; the adjacent Budget Lodge , 34th and Oceanfront (tel 757/428-4413 or 1-800/446-8388; $35-50); and the smallish Sea Side at 27th and Atlantic Avenue (tel 757/428-9341 or 1-800/348-7263; $35-50); - a nice break from the surrounding high-rises. For details of the lovely oceanside campground at First Landing/Seashore State Park, call 757/412-2300 or 1-800/933-7275.

The town also offers some great restaurants and a frenetic nightlife . Capt. John's Crabhouse , 33rd and Atlantic (tel 757/425-6263), has a fine seafood and meat evening buffet for $16.95, while Mahi Mah's , by the ocean at Seventh and Atlantic (tel 757/437-8030), has a creative menu of sushi, sashimi and other seafood, plus a wide selection of beers. Baja Cantina , 206 23rd St (tel 757/437-2920), is a friendly bar serving tasty Mexican food to a decent rock soundtrack. Check Port Folio , the listings newspaper, for details of live music events; the Abbey Road Pub at 203 22nd St (tel 757/425-6330), is a lively bar with over a hundred different beers and nightly live rock'n'roll; hostelers congregate most nights at the Jewish Mother , 3108 Pacific Ave (tel 757/422-5430), a daytime deli and late-night beer bar with free live music.
