Few cities are as closely associated with a sports team as GREEN BAY is with the football Packers: 108 miles north of Milwaukee, it's the smallest city in the US to have a major-league professional sports franchise and the only one to own a team. The Green BayPacker Hall of Fame , 855 Lombardi Ave (June-Aug daily 9am-6pm; rest of year daily 10am-5pm; $8; ), celebrates the dynastic years of the 1960s when the Pack won Superbowls I and II, as well as more recent stars such as Antonio Freeman and Brett Favre. Stuffed with hands-on displays, movie theaters and memorabilia, the museum offers more than enough to satisfy any football fan. Packer fans can also tour adjacent Lambeau Field (summer daily 9.30am-3.30pm; $7.50, or $10 combination ticket with Hall of Fame).

Also in this busy but not particularly attractive port, pride of place at the National Railroad Museum , 2285 S Broadway (May to Oct daily 9am-5pm; rest of year Mon-Fri 9am-5pm; $7 in summer including train ride, $6 in winter; ), goes to the 1.1 million-ton 1941 Union Pacific Big Boy locomotive, one of many such trains that served Green Bay's still-enormous freight depot. West on Hwy-172, opposite the airport, stands Wisconsin's biggest casino - Oneida Bingo & Casino . Tribal history, and the way in which profits from blackjack, video poker and bingo have improved education and social and health facilities, are examined at the Oneida Nation Museum , seven miles west of Hwy-41 as it runs south from downtown (Tues-Fri 10am-6pm, Sat 10am-5pm; $2; tel 920/869-2768, ).

The city's visitor center (tel 920/494-9507 or 1-888/867-3342, ) sits in the shadow of the football stadium, off Lombardi Avenue Drive. Titletown Brewing Company , 200 Dousman St (tel 920/437-2337), has a great setting for drinks in a former railroad depot downtown, while Brett Favre's Steakhouse , 1020 Advance St (tel 920/490-9663) is an up-scale family restaurant/sportsbar serving Southern cuisine.
